Investigating Multiple Steady States in Eutectic Freeze Crystallization

Qualifications

2018 BSc Chemical Engineering (University of Cape Town)

Project Description

Eutectic Freeze Crystallization (EFC) is used as a wastewater treatment process for industrial brines to recover water and salts. In EFC, the solution is cooled to temperatures below the eutectic point of the mixture such that ice and salt simultaneously crystallize out of solution. Eutectic freeze crystallization is driven by heat and mass transfer processes. The interaction of these two transport processes depends on the operating conditions of the crystallizer and is so complex that multiple stay states could occur if the initial operating conditions are different. The aim of this study is to understand how the initial ice seed loading affects the steady state conditions of a Na2SO4-water EFC system.
